Four-legged vandals plaguing Victor apple orchard |

Deer have always been frequent visitors to Munir Bahai’s apple orchards — but mostly in the winter, when it’s hard to find food. Not this year. For some reason, this summer they have been arriving in droves, said Bahai, who has operated the orchards behind his store, The Apple Farm on Route 444, since 1970. Bahai obtained a nuisance permit a few months ago, hoping to find a hunter willing to kill the deer. But so far it’s been a losing battle, he said. Hunters are reluctant to hunt on his land, he said, because they don’t want the responsibility of disposing of the deer carcasses. To make matters worse, the deer seem to know all they have to do is run onto the adjoining properties, where they are safe, he said.

Bad Apples of 2008 |
In the Summer of 2008 the region was hit by several hail storms that were devastating to the regions apple crops. The Apple Farm was no exception. Hail as large as half an inch in diameter came storming to the earth thrashing anything in its path. We were hard pressed to find a single apple that was not disfigured or damaged by the storm. A depressingly large percentage of our crop was not salvageable.
